Outline of role
Working with the Head of Costs, the Costs Lawyer will have responsibility for costs drafting and negotiation of bills of costs, which ensures that files are finished and billed and those bills submitted to the relevant bodies for payment.
Previous experience estimating/budgeting future costs is a key requirement
Membership of The Association of Costs Lawyers would be preferred.
Experience of commercial would be an advantage
People management skills, with the ability to delegate, direct and motivate staff
Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills; tactful and diplomatic in pressurise situations.
Highly client focussed.
Day to day duties
Preparation of Schedules/Bills of Costs before all divisions of the High Court, Court of Appeal, Arbitrations Tribunals (including International Arbitration), Supreme Court, Privy Council and County Courts.
Conduct of the detailed assessment proceedings to include drafting Points of Dispute and Replies.
Preparation of Summary Assessment Schedules of Costs.
Advising on security for costs applications and drafting supporting schedules of costs/drafting response submissions to schedules of costs served.
Preparation of client and Court estimates/budgets on small routine cases to large complex litigation.
Preparation of Precedent "H" Court budgets and advising fee earners on the same. Drafting response submissions to Precedent "H" Court budgets served.
Advising on costs orders/awards to be made and drafting supporting/opposing Submissions.
Providing a general advisory service to the Partnership/fee earners on contentious costs.
Advising on and negotiating with counsels' clerks as to brief fees
Maintain Costs "library" of cases.
