Starting a new job
Starting a new job brings always brings on a number of mixed emotions from excitement to worry! It’s normal.
To help with some of the most frequently asked questions here are some Do’s & Don’ts
Do
- Arrive early
- Wear smart clean clothes
- Be enthusiastic
- Smile and be friendly
- Listen
- Ask for more work if you have finished a task
- Do not be afraid to ask questions
Don’t
- Try not to be too shy
- Sit around doing nothing once you have finished a task
- Use your mobile or make personal calls
- Use the internet, facebook etc!
- Keep saying – In my last job we did it like this!
- Don’t over worry about making mistakes
What if it doesn’t work out?
Unfortunately there are no guarantees in life - starting a new job and it not working out is just one of them. However, please note the following point about the role before you make a decision;
- Don’t panic – the first few weeks can be quite daunting and can also be a big learning curve
- Give the job time to get going – employers will want to ease you into a role - but if you feel that you can handle more – ask
- It can take a good 2-4 weeks to start feeling comfortable in your role and new surroundings
On occasion you may not gel with the people you work with – unfortunately this is something that can never be forecast and is just unfortunate.
